Knowledge & skills

What you’ll learn

Our Web Development and Administration Specialization covers the following:

E-commerce

Explore internet marketing, retail, payment, and order fulfillment. Learn about various e-commerce models for business-to-business (B2B), business-to-consumer (B2C), and consumer-to-consumer (C2C) websites.

Web architecture

Study web architecture and connectivity to better understand internet protocols, such as transmission control protocol/internet protocol (TCP/IP), domain name system (DNS), simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP), hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP), and file transfer protocol (FTP). Dissect the design of internet or corporate intranet infrastructures to meet specific needs.

Advanced web application development

Study the basics of design, coding scripting, and database connectivity for web-based applications. Strengthen your UI and UX skills by building applications that balance functionality, clarity, and responsiveness.

Web development

Learn to use cascading style sheets (CSS), databases, and code to improve the operation of front-end and back-end website development.

Database infrastructure

Learn to establish the database and infrastructure of a site in a clean and usable manner. Gain the skills needed to create the core elements of a website to ensure its function and appeal.

Web security

Examine issues involved in protecting web-based applications from external threats while safeguarding customer privacy and accessibility. Explore how automated scanning tools and AI-enabled helpers can assist in identifying vulnerabilities or testing variations of your code.

Innovation

Deploy information systems to an organization’s strategic and competitive benefit and apply relevant tools for application development, operational effectiveness, information asset management, and decision-making.

Logic and design

Study basic programming logic and algorithm design, including control structures for sequential, iterative, and decision-based processing. Learn how computers think in order to set up complex patterns and controls. Experiment with AI-driven problem-solving tools that can generate alternative approaches or identify logic issues.

Structured analysis and design

Study basic programming logic and algorithm design, including control structures for sequential, iterative, and decision-based processing. Learn how computers think in order to set up complex patterns and controls. Experiment with AI-driven problem-solving tools that can generate alternative approaches or identify logic issues.

Interacting with computers

Use computers and computer systems to program hardware, write software, set up functions, enter data, or process information. This essential skill will make you a better technology user and will inform the way you set up networks.

Embedded programs — demonstrate skills at every step

Obtain 2 additional credentials with our unique 3-in-1 design. Every course in our Undergraduate Certificate in Programming Essentials Certificate  and Associate Degree in Information Technology and Networking program is included within our Computer Information Systems Bachelor’s Degree program with a specialization in Web Development and Administration.1  This gives you the opportunity to earn a certificate and an associate degree on the way to your bachelor's degree.

Career opportunities in web development

Graduates of our Web Development and Administration Specialization program may consider the following careers:
  • Applications manager

An applications manager chooses which software applications to use within a company. They have a baseline skill level in IT that enables them to test and choose the right software for the unique needs of their employer.

  • Front-end and back-end developer

Both front-end and back-end developers are involved in the development of a site. Front-end developers primarily deal with the appearance of a site, while back-end developers ensure its functionality.

  • Web application developer

Web application developers, also known as web app developers, are responsible for the development and design of web applications.

  •

    Web designer

Web designers are primarily responsible for the layout and interface elements of a website or web application. They ensure that sites are visually appealing and intuitive from a user interface (UI) standpoint.

  • Web master

Web masters are responsible for ensuring that a site stays up to date and is usable and well-maintained. They often oversee teams of designers and developers when working with larger companies. In the past, web masters were solely responsible for each element of a website, and this is sometimes still true for webmasters at small companies.
