FAQs: MBA with a Project Management Specialization

Do you need an MBA to be a project manager?

No, you do not always need an MBA to become a project manager, though having an MBA with a Project Management Specialization or a Master’s in Project Management can help demonstrate that you've invested time in your education and skillset. In many cases, it’s good to have additional credentials on your resume, as it may help you stand out to potential employers. However, having more credentials does not guarantee employment.

How long does it take to earn an MBA in project management?

You can earn your MBA with a Project Management Specialization in:

  • As little as 1 year and 8 months with an accelerated schedule3
  • 3 years with a normal schedule4

What is an MBA in project management vs. PMP?

An MBA with a Project Management Specialization is a graduate-level degree from an accredited university and helps you learn business principles and project management skills that can be applied across a variety of industries. A PMP®, which stands for Project Management Professional, is a certification awarded by the Project Management Institute. This professional certification may help you stand out to employers, but it is different from a degree.

What are the admissions requirements for an MBA with a Project Management Specialization?

To be admitted to this program, you must hold a valid bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution and an official transcript. In some cases, you may have to take the GRE, GMAT, or a Keller-administered admissions exam. Visit our graduate school admissions page for more details.

Is project management a growing industry?

Yes, project management is a growing industry. While actual local growth may vary, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects nationwide employment of project management specialists to grow 6% from 2024 to 2034, faster than the average for all occupations, with more than 78,000 job openings each year, on average, over this period.

MBA vs. Master's in Project Management: What is the difference?

Both programs are graduate business degrees that can help you pursue career advancement opportunities. The differences lie in each program’s curriculum. A specialized master’s degree program focuses primarily on topics directly related to project management. An MBA covers the broader landscape of business administration, such as leadership, technology, and business strategy — skills that can help you apply your business education across a wider range of industries and career roles.
