Minneapolis Sun Post - Brooklyn Park woman earns trip to Rio Olympics

Lisa Cha, a Computer Information System- Business Management senior at DeVry University, is set to experience the Rio Olympics first-hand.

Cha, along with another student at DeVry, was selected to participate in the DeVry University Team USA Student Immersion Experience in Rio. DeVry and the United States Olympic Committee collaborated on the exclusive program to provide DeVry students and recent graduates with on-the-ground, real-world experience working with USOC IT professionals at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

While in Rio, Cha will be working with the USOC with all IT set-up, management and maintenance at the USA House and other locations to diagnose and resolve computer and mobile phone tech issues and helping Team USA athletes and staff with connectivity, assist with A/V set-up for Team USA meetings, events and other events, and assist in maintaining inventory records and documentation for equipment at the USA House.

“I’m mostly excited to learn what they can teach me,” Cha said. “I know we will be resolving computer and mobile phone issues while also helping with connectivity, so hopefully I can learn all that and bring it back.”

While Cha is looking forward to gaining experience in the field, she also hopes to fully take advantage of her first trip outside of the United States.

“I want to gain skills, make new friends and gain knowledge of new countries,” Cha said. “I think this will be similar to a test and it should be great.”

Cha, a mother of three, also hopes her experience can show her family that great experiences and opportunities are possible for them in the future.

“School is something that is very important in our family, so to be able to be selected to go to Rio lets them know that there are opportunities out there,” Cha said. “They now know there are chances for something amazing to happen.”

The program was open to DeVry third and fourth year students and recent graduates who are majoring/majored in Network and Communications Management or Computer Information Systems. The candidates also had to have successfully performed troubleshooting and maintenance on electronic equipment following current standards, code, and procedures to ensure effective operation of those devices, general knowledge of related software, excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate technical issues, and analytical and process-oriented skills; strong attention to detail.
